Name: Awan
Age: 21
Gender and sexuality: Female, heterosexual
Family: Arandan (mother), Wirter (father), D’ar (older brother)
Weyrmate: n/a
Wing: n/a
Rank: Cook (maybe a candidate?)
Appearance: Never trust a skinny cook and Awan is the living example of this. She’s all curves all over. Yes, she’s overweight, but she’s happy, she feels great and as far as she’s concerned she looks amazing. She has wide hips, sturdy thighs and breasts that are big enough that a hug from her will squish you and she likes giving hugs. Awan has love-handles and stretchmarks on her hips, a belly, a hint of a double chin and all those other insignificant things a woman obtains at her weight.
She’s always moving, flitting from pot to pan, lifting spoons and carefully tasting concoctions of her own devising or from recipes handed down through the cooks or her own family. Her hands gesture when she talks, left to right and up and down until you’re not certain where to look anymore.
And then there is Awan’s face. It’s a round, lovely full face framed with black curls that will go frizzy at the drop of a hat and warm, deep brown eyes and a smile that is always there except when it’s time to get serious. Her entire face just lights up when she smiles. Little dimples appear in her cheeks and thin and elegant eyebrows creep up just a bit.
Awan’s skin, smooth and creamy brown as it is, is not flawless with the stretchmarks and a few small birthmarks scattered over her body, the most notable one the reddish, thickened patch, not even the size of the pad of her thumb, just below her right ear. Other than that there is a spattering of round, tiny paler spots on her lower arms from grease burns.
Personality: Awan is a mother without ever having been pregnant. Shards kid, you’re skinny, what you been eatin’? And there appears a plate with food piled up on. She’ll take in every little wretch, human or not, feed them, patch their clothes, give them a hug and a place to come and never ask anything in return. Yes, people take advantage of that, but she thinks that it would be worse if she became bitter and refused to help where she could.
Awan loves her food. Her size is a side-effect to that, but as she figures: there’s just more to love. Besides, she’s a lot sturdier than those little snap-at-the-ankle little waives that flit about the Weyr. Ashes, firelizards eat more than those. It can’t be healthy. She has an incredible sweet tooth and is always on the look out for a new way to improve her sweets and pastries, or people to try them out on. Look out, there’s Awan with something new and she will force-feed it to you if she has to!
She gullible, though. She’ll fall for every sob story that comes her way, or any claim of being of a higher rank than her. She’s also a bit of a suck-up, not terribly so but she prefers to not get into trouble with those higher ups. The best way she knows how to stay out of trouble is just do her job and not get involved in anything ‘hinky’ and, y’know, make them something extra nice once in a while as a gift.
History: Awan’s history is really rather boring and common. She was born in the Weyr to a midwife, her mother, and a weaver, her father. She has one older brother, who loves to tease her but loves her dearly and can often be found these days begging her for something nice to eat made just for him. While her brother was ‘dragon-struck’ from the day he opened his eyes and quickly managed to get himself Searched and even ended up Impressing to a blue, Awan never really got around to it.
She was a happy child growing up, always dragging a smaller kid around who she thought needed a friend. She always loved her food, sharing it happily and sneaking into the kitchens when she could to see how all those nommies were made.
It only made sense that she became a part of the kitchens. It’s a good place for a woman to be. Since she wasn’t looking to get Searched, though she wouldn’t say no if such a thing were to happen, and was still single, her father started poking around to find her someone ‘suitable’ to settle down with and become a proper woman and good housewife. She’s managed to sabotage all the little set-ups her father arranged so far. It’s not that she doesn’t want to please her father, it’s just that all the boys he found are not to her taste.
Ambling along in her life, she doubts that she will ever do anything that matters or makes a difference except for the wretches she takes care of from time to time. Awan is okay with that.
