Name: Kalden
Age: 15
Gender and sexuality: Bisexual FtMale
Family: N/A
Weyrmate: N/A
Wing: N/A
Rank: Weyrfolk; Apprentice Smith
Appearance: Due to his short, lanky stature and unmasculine face, Kalden could be easily mistaken for a 14-turn-old, although you might not want to tell him that directly. Well, you probably would get away safely anyways: His skinny arms lack any sort of muscle, and he certainly would not be able to hold his own in a fight. Still, he has quite a few scars across his body from a variety of smithing accidents. His light olive skin is usually spotted with dirt of some kind or another, and his round face is topped by a mess of fluffy blond hair that sticks this way and that. He also wears a simple pair of eyeglasses due to his nearsightedness.
Kalden considers it rather lucky that he was born with rather unnoticeable hips and a chest that could be easily (although still rather painfully) bound until flat. It helps that he tends to stand with his shoulders hunched forward and his arms crossed. Still, he is fairly careful about wearing loose-fitting, often layered clothing, often in rather dull colors, in order not to draw too much attention to his body.
Personality: Kalden is not a happy person. He is a pessimist, through and through, and a fairly grumpy one at that. He has a fairly extensive list of things that he disapproves of, ranging from canines to healers to being cold. Any single one of these don't particularly bother him too much, but the combination of too many can make him rather snappish. However, it would be fairly difficult to get him legitimately angry; more often than not, Kalden would rather find somewhere dark to sulk than actually confront anybody. However, he simply can't stand people who tell him to just cheer up. Kalden tends to blame his antisocial behavior on his history and his secrets, and so he resents anybody telling him that he should be in a better mood. It would be more accurate to say that he dislikes himself, and so he becomes confused and frustrated at anybody who seems to like him.
To say that Kalden has trust issues is a bit of an understatement. Of all the people he has met in his life, he could count on his hands how many he would consider his true friends, and they have all invariably parted ways for one reason or another. Instead, Kalden drowns himself in his work, making all sorts of gizmos that the Weyr might need. Every so often, though, the things he makes tend more on the artistic side, although Kalden would hesitate before showing them to anybody. He definitely has an artistic mind; however, he's simply too insecure to consider it relevant.
Most of Kalden's recent life is marked by ennui and listlessness. He has no absolute goal in life; smithing is interesting, but it isn't where Kalden's heart is most of the time. More often than not, he spends his time wandering around the Weyr, as if waiting for something to happen to him.
History: Kalden was born to a very typical family, the youngest of 4 siblings -- three sisters and one brother (Kalden would see the births of another brother and sister before he ran away). He grew up in a small, quiet cothold that strove for a less technological way of life, and from a young age Kalden knew exactly what was expected of him: become a good wife and housekeeper and raise a large family. However, not once was Kalden happy with this decision, and he made it known loudly. When not amusing himself by making little gadgets out of whatever materials were available to him, he was yelling at his parents, at his siblings, at everybody, and generally hating the world.
For a long time, Kalden figured that he only felt uncomfortable being called a girl because of the way females were treated in the world. He figured that, with the opportunities given to females on Pern, every young woman became almost suicidally depressed at the thought of pregnancy and had the strange urge to carve up their chest. However, the more he tried to force away the thoughts and feelings, the stronger they became, until one day Kalden had the strange idea to try to act as if he were a boy, just for a little bit. Just before a Gather at a nearby major Hold, the 14-turn-old Kalden infuriated his parents by cutting his hair short, but there wasn't too much they could do at that point. During the Gather, he constantly sneaked off so that he could introduce himself with this new name of his, Kalden. And, to his delight, it worked.
After the Gather, home life was simply unbearable. It didn't take long for him to make the decision to run away, to start a new life as Kalden. Weyrs, he knew, had a reputation of being more free sexually -- maybe they'd accept somebody like him? The trek was a lot more difficult than young Kalden had assumed, but be eventually found himself at Southern Weyr. In a stroke of luck, he found a smith who was swayed by Kalden's eagerness to do something useful.
