A Clockwork Pern
Character Creation Rules and Guidelines
Candidates
1. Male Candidates range in age from fourteen to twenty-one. Female Candidates range from fourteen to twenty-two. It is said that Searchriders seem to prefer Candidates on the older range, but beware- your characters is not guaranteed to Impress during their first Hatching, and they can age out of the correct age range.
2. Weyrbrats (children born in the Weyr) are automatically allowed to stand when they reach the correct age. All others must be Searched. Searching may be an IC or OOC process- whichever you prefer, and depending on how many Searchriders we have and how busy they are.
3. Candidates will never be Searched directly from a Crafthall. A Searchdragon may be at the local hold, and they are free to attend, but the dragon will never land directly at the Hall.
4. Masters in any craft are inevitably too old to be Searched.
5. Drudges will NOT be allowed to stand for dragon clutches, and they will not be Searched. They also will not Impress- period. It is possible that they may be allowed to stand for a wher clutch if backed by a rider, but extremely unlikely.
6. Candidates are expected to spend at least four hours a day on various chores, which include mainly menial tasks- sweeping, cleaning, gardening, cooking, etc. They also have lessons, though these are not every day and may not actually be played out ICly.
7. Candidates are forbidden from sexual activity... But that doesn't stop them. Bear in mind, however, that a pregnant Candidate will not be allowed to stand until at least one month after she's given birth. She may not know she's pregnant, but the dragons will, and will block her from standing. If the father is known, he also will be forbidden from standing.
8. Candidates are also forbidden from fighting and drinking excessively. They are expected to treat their betters with respect. If they break these rules, punishment can be expected... Though it can be fun to torture your characters!
Weyrlings
1. Weyrling guidelines are similar to what the Candidates have to endure, but are enforced much more strictly. They are forbidden from having sex, and that rule cannot be broken. You risk damaging your dragon's mind by doing so.
2. Chores are replaced by more frequent lessons and taking care of your dragon. Not all lessons will be played out ICly. Two missed lessons means an automatic failure (unless you have posted a leave of absence).
3. Weyrlings have very little free time. Their dragons take up most of what they have.
Dragonriders and Wherhandlers
1. You cannot apply as a goldrider/goldhandler. Bronzerider/bronze wher handler applications must include a role playing sample.
2. Greenriders are fun. You should apply as a greenrider.
3. You are automatically stuck in a wing. You can request to be made Wingsecond or Wingleader, but it may be rejected.
4. Please read the plot for rules regarding female greenriders and blueriders. It's important and related to our canon.
5. Dragons and whers have hide, not scales, and two headknobs. They have four limbs, plus two wings. They do not have tattoos, and they do not wear clothes.
6. In our canon, whers cannot fly. Nor can they carry a rider. They are used primarily for mining and in factories. For more information, see the information post.
Crafters
1. Apprentices generally range in age from twelve/thirteen until eighteen or older.
2. Journeymen generally advance past age eighteen. Eighteen is a fairly young Journeyman.
3. Mastery is achieved at 30, at the earliest, and is difficult to do.
Holders
1. The first son and daughter of a Lord Holder or important merchant will never come to the Weyr. They may be found suitable, but they are too important for political reasons. Second and onwards though...
2. We don't want too many Lord Holder's kids running about, however. This will be regulated. Please make sure you read about the current Holds, and see how many children may already be created to a certain Lord and Lady.
General
1. Most Pernese are tanned, with dark hair and brown eyes. Blonde hair is far less common, and red hair even less so. Pale skin requires justification.
2. Eyes come in brown, blue, hazel, and green. They do not come in pink, purple, 'flashing', or 'changing'. Differently colored eyes are extremely uncommon.
3. HADs and HAFs may not be created. If you are interested in one, talk to Wit. We may end up not having any.
4. You may come in with one pet. Weyr residents may have one fire lizard (gold and bronze must be specifically applied for), or a canine. Felines do not exist as pets here, and runners do not live happily at a Weyr. Dragons /eat/ runners.
5. Names should be generally Pernese, and not in languages like Japanese or Italian. Male riders have hyphenated names. Female riders do not.
