Shifting Sands
Long before Lessa and Ramoth, turns before Fax was even a sparkle in the sky, Igen Weyr was founded. These are the legends that exist now only in scrolls and in bedtime stories. These are the tales of Igen Weyr in the 3rd Pass.
The Story:
During the second Pass, the smallest of the Weyrs had been abandoned and its remaining staff merged with Telgar. The combination of plague and losses to threadfall had devastated the Weyr. But as the third Pass approached once again the other three Weyrs were full to bursting. 160 Pairs were sent back to the sandy Weyr early in turn 500 and thread began to fall right on the mark eight years later. The Weywoman selected for Igen was from Telgar, from the old Igen stock before the Weyr had been abandoned. Chariana took a firm hand and whipped the Weyr into thread fighting shape. And so, she and Weyrleader I'kon met the third pass with a Weyr now at nearly full capacity.
The earlier scrolls had warned about other disasters than simply the Red Star when Pass came, but few heeded those now. So when the earthshakes ripped across the continent the devastation it caused was massive. Both Igen Hold and Weyr were hit hard and of the 400 dragons in residence on half survived. Only two Queens made it through, both Igen bred. Weyrwoman Chariana and her golden Hsariath were spared along with Eleri and her Mhalath. Igen struggled to recover and to meet threadfall while attempting to help the holders. Those out on the plains of Keroon fared the best, but both Holds were hit with devastating losses and it was turns before the last of the rubble was cleared away.
Some meet such hardship and grow through it and others are broken by it. For several years after, Chriana became a shell of the vibrant woman she had earlier been. She had lost too many friends, buried too many family members. To top it off, thread was falling outside of where the charts predicted it would be and far too many falls were those in which the thread fell in clumps. It seemed impossible for Igen to recover its strength. A new Weyrwoman was sent for to bolster Igen's failing strength and then Chariana, only now 58 turns declared that she would be stepping down from the position of Igen's Weyrwoman and it would be up to the younger women to decided the next step in the leadership.
3rd Pass: Turn 544: Spring
It was Eleri's Gold Mhalath that rose first over the recently transfered Keter of Gold Lyrith. The flight was declared open to any Wingleader that wished to participate. But it was Igen's own V'me and Bronze Fellinth that won the day. Chariana stepped down but remained at the Weyr as did the previous Weyrleader I'kon.
Minor earthshakes are still rocking the continent now and then and the things that follow like plague and food shortages have kept the Weyr running on thin ice even between falls. Igen Hold is in serious trouble, the river that is its lifeblood has slowed to a mere trickle and while this is normal in the summer months it is far from normal in the early spring. People fear that the earthshakes have changed the course of the river.
And to top things off, Keroon Hold has gone all but silent. The Lord Holder, Alaxis was well known for being a vicious and cunning man, but now in the wake of the earthshakes, Keroon's silence has everyone on edge. Both Eleri and V'me decided to send a bluerider to the Hold to find out if there had been another shake or if plague had simply wiped them out. But he has not yet returned and after several days the other dragons of the Weyr reported that they cannot even hear the blue.
